NC ports being asked to give land for park

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) _ The board of directors of the North Carolina State Ports Authority is being asked to consider turning land originally purchased for a new port over to the state.

The board is scheduled to meet in Wilmington on Thursday and hear a presentation from representatives of an environmental group known as Save the Cape.

Earlier this month, the group released a prospectus on creating a park and a bird sanctuary on a 600-acre tract of land near Southport. The proposal suggests turning over the land to the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The land was purchased to create a container ship terminal seven years ago but has not been developed.
