California High School Students Give Nazi Salute At Athletics Banquet

Video obtained by the Daily Beast showed a group of high school students from Pacifica High School in Garden Grove, California singing a Nazi marching song while giving the Nazi salute. The eight-second video clip was recorded in 2018 during an off-campus banquet to honor athletes at the school. There were 12 students in the video, and nine of them appeared to raise their hand to perform the Nazi salute while another student sang a German song that was played for German troops during World War II.

School officials learned of the video four months later after it had been sent around on Snapchat by students. They issued a statement to the Daily Beast saying that they handled the situation but did not comment on what disciplinary actions they took against the students.

"While the district cannot comment on student discipline, the school did address this situation with all involved students and families," a district spokesperson said. "The district adheres to strong policies about harassment and cultural sensitivity, and we condemn all acts of anti-Semitism and hate in all forms. We remain focused on educating students about cultural sensitivity and are committed to holding students accountable, educating them on the consequences of their choices, and the impact these actions have on our schools and community at large."

Not everybody in the community was happy with the school's response. They were upset that the district did not address the issue with the community.

"Generally speaking, especially when something like this involves a group, we would think a more meaningful approach would be to use this as a learning opportunity, as an opportunity community-wide to state what our values are," explained Rabbi Peter Levi, who is the director of the Anti Defamation League's Orange County chapter. "This requires investigation and conversation… We'd like to see a more systematic response."
