Nancy Wilson Explains Why Her First Single Is A Bruce Springsteen Cover

Heart's Nancy Wilson is hard at work on a solo album after decades of being asked if and when she would finally go out on her own.

Wilson's first solo single, a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising," is due out Friday.

She tells Q104.3 New York's Jim Kerr and Shelli Sonstein that The Boss is one of her favorite artists of all-time. Seeing his Springsteen on Broadway show — particularly his performance of "The Rising" — is part of what inspired her to make the upcoming album.

"I was so taken with those lyrics," she explained. "The story of the song about the fireman going up the stairs to try to save people in the [Twin] Towers and realize he was not gonna make it so he let his wife know...Just one of those hero kind of moments where it takes you all the way through your own humanity, what's meaningful when people are in peril and souls are leaving the Earth. I just think for now it's another really appropriate moment to sing that song with an aspirational, sort of, slant on it.

Springsteen himself reportedly heard Nancy's version of the song and gave it his seal of approval.

"The word came back that he really likes it. I did the Snoopy dance when I heard that," she added.

Nancy says she's still working on the album and expects it will be released in March of next year. She adds that Heart will be back on tour next summer if the pandemic situation allows for live concerts again.
