In a devastating move for Carolina hockey fans, the Hurricanes announced on Wednesday (December 23) that the outdoor game scheduled for next year at Carter-Finley Stadium has been postponed indefinitely. The game, set for February 20, 2021, was originally announced in February 2020 before the full impact of the pandemic hit the country.
Raleigh was set to host the NHL's 32nd regular-season outdoor game as part of the league's 12th NHL Stadium Series game. Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon was excited for the team to be chosen as the first NHL market in the Southeast to host an outdoor game.
"While we are extremely disappointed that we will not be able to host an outdoor games this season, the health and safety of our fans remains our top priority," said Don Waddell, Hurricanes President and General Manager. "We look forward to hosting the game in the near future and rewarding our incredible fan base with an unforgettable experience."
The NHL is set to begin its abbreviated 56-game season on January 13. Teams will be allowed to travel but will only play opponents in their division. The regular season is set to end May 8, with the Stanley Cup Final concluding by July 9.
