Adams' journey to the podium began in high school, where she discovered volleyball by accident. She was reading a book at her best friend's incoming freshman volleyball camp when she was asked to join. This marked the beginning of her illustrious career in the sport.

Adams attended Mount Notre Dame High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she led her team to the 2006 Ohio Division I State Championship in both volleyball and basketball. She was a 2007 Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 recruit and was ranked the No. 3 recruit nationally by PrepVolleyball.com. Her high school success led her to the University of Texas, where she continued to excel in volleyball.

During her time at the University of Texas, Adams earned numerous honors and awards, including the 2011 Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year and the 2010 AVCA All-America First Team. She led the team with her .486 hitting percentage in 2009 and ranked No. 1 in the NCAA statistics with her .443 hitting percentage in 2010.
