DACA Is Back — Here’s What That Means to You

It’s baaaaack

Applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA) are going forward once again at the Department of Homeland Security.

“Is this a surprise to anyone?” asked Glenn on the show today. He added, “It shouldn’t be because both Republicans and Democrats want DACA. They always have, and so does the president.”

That was sooo two years ago

President Trump has been giving mixed messages about the fate of immigrants who are illegally brought into the United States as children. For example, at a press conference on February 16, 2017, Trump had this to say about DACA:

“We’re going to show great heart. DACA is a very, very difficult subject for me, I will tell you. To me, it’s one of the most difficult subjects I have, because you have these incredible kids, in many cases — not in all cases. In some of the cases they’re having DACA and they’re gang members and they’re drug dealers too. But you have some absolutely incredible kids — I would say mostly — they were brought here in such a way — it’s a very, very tough subject.”

However, during campaign events in 2016, then-candidate Trump said:

“We will immediately terminate President Obama’s two illegal executive amnesties, in which he defied federal law and the constitution to give amnesty to approximately 5 million illegal immigrants.”

Since when is illegal acceptable?

“DACA is dangerous to both political parties because they are legislating based on emotion, when it should be legislating based on the Constitution. It’s not the children of illegal immigrants’ fault. They are innocent, but their parents are not. So what’s the consequence? Is there a consequence for breaking the law? If not, do we have laws? These are the conversations we need to have. When it comes down to it, make no mistake, DACA is amnesty. We have to make the decision to accept or reject amnesty. Apparently, in Washington, they are telling us that the American people will accept it.”
