Parts of Virginia Beach Encouraged To Evacuate For Hurricane Florence

Virginia Beach City Manager Dave Hansen says the city will issue an evacuation order for Sandbridge, Back Bay, and the southern watershed ahead of Hurricane Florence.

The city believes those areas will be at higher risk than any others in the city.Hansen said he encourages people who live in parts of the southern section of the city to also evacuate.He says he can’t force people to evacuate, but hopes they heed his warnings.

"That’s a choice people make," Hansen said. "I can’t make everybody evacuate. I can recommend that they evacuate."Shelters will start opening in Virginia Beach starting Thursday.

Virginia, North and South Carolina have declared states of emergency ahead of the storm.

The US Navy is also evacuating 30 ships from Norfolk ahead of the storm.
