After the North Carolina State Fair was canceled because of the pandemic, many people were missing their fix of deep fried food. To help alleviate this, an event with over 20 vendors serving fair food is being held at the fairgrounds in Raleigh.
"It's been a beautiful weekend," fair officials said in a statement. "It would have been the best State Fair weather. With that, there are many people ready to get out of the house and move around."
Most in attendance were wearing facial coverings, CBS 17 reports, but hundreds of people still showed up to the outdoor event and were in close proximity to each other. For its part, the fairgrounds has provided extra space and hand washing stations, and the vendors have hand sanitizer near their points of sale. Additionally, the event is being described as "take home," so attendees are encouraged to purchase their food and take it home with them.
"We really don't have a way to estimate how many people have visited," the fair statement continued. "From what we have observed, the turnover has been consistently quick throughout the day, which leads us to believe attendees are being vigilant about taking their food to go."
The fair food event is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. through Saturday. Facial coverings and social distancing are required, and attendees are not allowed to gather.
