12-Year-Old Boy Fatally Shoots Home Intruder Who Attacked His Grandmother

A 73-year-old woman is recovering after being attacked by two home intruders at her North Carolina residence over the weekend.

Linda Ellis, of Goldsboro, was attacked around 1 a.m. Saturday (February 13) when two masked robbers entered her home, Daily Mail reports. After demanding that she give them money, they shot Ellis in the leg. Her 12-year-old grandson stepped in after she was attacked, sending the intruders fleeing when he opened fire, ultimately fatally wounding one of them.

Ellis' son and the boy's great-uncle Randolph Bunn was also at the home during the invasion. He said the boy shot at the intruders in self-defense, a statement police seem to agree with, according to the media outlet.

"[The intruder] just shot his grandma...He would have shot him too, he would've shot me too, he would've killed us all," said Bunn.

When police responded to the scene, they found Ellis in the home with a gunshot wound to the leg. They found a man, identified as 19-year-old Khalil Herring, at a nearby intersection also suffering from a gunshot wound. According to police, Herring was one of the masked intruders and was shot during the robbery. Both Ellis and Herring were taken to a local hospital, where the man later died from his injuries.

Goldsboro police are not anticipating any charges against the boy, ABC 11 reports, and the investigation remains ongoing as the search for additional suspects.
