A group of eight people stormed a North Carolina classroom Tuesday morning (May 25) and reportedly attacked a 14-year-old student, WFMY reports. One of the alleged attackers is the 37-year-old parent of another student.
The incident took place around 9:45 a.m. at Southern Guilford High School when a large group of students ages 16 to 18, plus a parent, interrupted a class to assault a female student. A school resource officer (SRO) said the attack on the teen student was intentional.
"What we can determine at this point — not counting the student who was the target of the attack — there were eight people who came in with intentions of participating in the attack," said SRO Capt. Brian Hall, of the Guilford County Sheriff's Office.
According to investigators, the attack stemmed from an altercation at a bus stop Monday morning. Three of the students accused in the assault attend Southern Guilford while the other students attend different schools in the county. Hall said one of the attackers was the mother of another student involved in the attack who was there not only to show "support for her student, but actually participated in the assault as well."
"You look at parents as the ones who are supposed to be giving the kid guidance as to how to handle these types of things, not encouraging it," Hall told WFMY. "That's what we had in this case — a parent that went too far and participated with their child in clearly criminal behavior."
The 14-year-old sustained minor injuries during the attack. A spokesperson with Guilford County Schools said they are investigating how the group gained access to the school, but it is believe that all protocols were followed.
As of noon Thursday (May 27), no arrests have been made but Hall said charges are expected against those involved, including assault, trespassing and inciting a riot.
